This week: Declines in cancer, the significance of hospitals, climate & religion, bird maps, gender pay gaps, intelligence & personality, the pyramids of Giza, fun history podcasts, and more.
Thank you for this! This was just lovely to read over my morning coffee.
I think a lot about how personality interacts with intellectual development. Betting there's potential to improve academic outcomes there. Can treating childhood anxiety increase intelligence? If you do more to inspire imagination in lower openness students, can that boost their cognitive devel?
It's common to tailor students' educational experiences based on cognitive tests, but to my knowledge no one tailors their educational experiences based on personality traits that might influence cognitive development.
Happy to hear you enjoyed it! :) I think it seems very plausible that anxiety, for example, is important in test performance and perhaps intelligence more broadly. The only educational tailoring that comes to mind is moving forward school starts to match sleep schedules better, I wonder what other changes people could try.
Congrats on submitting your PhD! I'm in the final 3 months of writing mine. Enjoyed reading this - thanks
Thank you very much! Ooh, only a little time to go, good luck on yours too :)
> I included a cat pun here at first but then I deleted it to save you from wincing

Re demography maybe you’ll find something useful here https://www.philipncohen.com/teaching
That looks great. I didn't know Philip Cohen had teaching materials online, thank you!
Philip Jenkins recently wrote a fantastic book on climate change and religiosity, if you’re interested!
